Walad Awah (Short bio)
Visual Artist
Born and raised in the camp of Layun. Currently I live as a nomad between the camps and Spain. My early education took place in the camps. For me the camps are an open school of life and art. We learn so much in the camps. I am a painter; I work a lot with oil paints and canvases. My paintings reflect life in the Sahrawi refugee camps and our people’s life in exile. My art is a tool to tell about my people and the life of the refugees. My art also criticizes the world for neglecting humanity and forgetting such oppressed peoples. My art deals with the human rights issues, the refugees’ issues, and the silence from the international community towards the issue of Western Sahara, Africa’s Last Colony.
I am inspired by the Sahrawi women. They are a symbol for resistance and resilience. I am proud to focus my art practice on the Sahrawi women for the great work they do. One of my most important exhibitions focuses on the Sahrawi women. I have exhibited in different countries including Panama, Mexico, Spain, France and Cuba. I use my art for advocacy. My art can be the voice of my people.
