Federico Guzman (Short Bio)

Federico Guzman, also known as Fico, is an Andalusian painter and sculptor . He is one of the youngest members of the so-called Nueva Figuración Sevillana that revolutionized the national artistic scene in the late 1980s.
Guzman is one of the amin organizers of the International Encounter of the arts and Human Rights in Western Sahara, also known as ARTifariti. He has participated as an artist, an organizer and a curator of many of its editions. He has helped shape its philosophy and vision, he created many international connections and collaborations as part of ARTifariti. His art works are spread all over the Saharawi refugee camps, notably the famous children sculpture at the center of Samara Camp, the mural at the Ministry of Culture and many others in different places. It’s with great sadness that me learned about the passing of Federico Guzman early February 2026. His works appeared in many international museums, art festivals and galleries including the MoMA, Museo Reina Sofia, la MEIAC, CAAC and many others.
I have had several exchanges, collaborations and work with Fico. I am extremely honored to have Federico nominate me for some important art events and collaborations. He wrote this wonderful piece “An Artist Reflection on the Work of Mohamed Sleiman” which I consider one of the highest honors for me as an artist. Federico was a great friend, an amazing mentor and a wonderful human being, R.I.P Fico!
