Adad Ammi (Short bio)
Photographer / Graphic Designer
I was born and raised in the Sahrawi refugee camps; in Tifariti Neighborhood, Samara Camp. I studied biology in Algeria and then came back to the camps. I took a lot courses in photography and graphic design as well as media and communication. I now mainly practice photography, filmmaking and graphic design. I use my photography to document life in the refugee camps. But I want to show a different picture about the refugees’ life. I don’t like the pictures being shown sometimes about the refugees elsewhere. They are often portrayed as sad, miserable and hungry. I want to show that we just like other people. I photograph people in their normal situations, and in such moments, they smile and they laugh, they have hope. And I am sure it’s the case everywhere else. It’s not always this negative. We can have a normal life, just like other people around the world. This photograph captures a moment before the sandstorm hit our camp. In such moments, the family gathers at the tent of our grandmother. The kids are running to their grandmother but they are also laughing and talking to their relatives on the phone and tell them about it.
